Is it wrong to feel this way?

Thursday, November 06, 2008

I've taken some freelance.

I have many loves, this here is one of them. The illustrious and smug Ruby Pruett (note the younger photo fully illustrating her unwillingness to relent to the inane pleadings of passerbys for a smile). I may or may not have just named a lip balm after her—coming to an apothecary near you. Now if only I could decide on clear or white labels? It will be printed with metallic gold and blood red ink, anyone have a spare metallic Pantone book? I'd be indebted.

Sometimes I get up to this...

When I should really be doing this.

Some inspiration.

I know it seems I cease to be a graphic designer these days but once and awhile I get up to something..... This is a piece of Maryam and Ash's wedding website—their getting hitched! In France no less. I was trying to capture the very colorful personalities of them both. Though I'm oddly obsessed with designing in black & white.... a habit I sorely need to shake.

A more analog project but stay tuned for the finished product.

This is going to be something good.

I illustrated and designed a splash page for the theater company Lion's View. Not that I can wrap my brain around code or anything, it's one giant jpeg!
Check it out: Lion's View

This was my last illustration job, boys for a change!

'Isn't she loooooovely? Isn't she wonderful? Isn't she precious? Less than one minute old!' I know, I know totally hokey. These just came in the mail and I'm pretty excited. We're having a never ending debate about legibility cause this baby is only 2.75 wide. If I stick with the finer printing processes I'm going to have to strategize a redesign. Wait till I stick this to a tube! Britt's company printed these btw, check them out: The Paper Moon Project

[Click on her btw, that little scan just isn't doing her any justice.]

How cute is this little guy? It's making me re-think my tube strategy which is INSANE seeing as tho I'm up to my ears in amber glass and custom made kraft tubes, to order yet another round of bottles would be nutso-coo-coo. Blame it on the flu. I had to make a new stamp for this little guy cause the vial was too short. My biz name and the product name will now run flush along the sides. Kind of like a fortune. This thing is so cute I'm dying!

Okay... so maybe the design of this little project went way east, but I think it looks a whole lot better. This little guy will be on store shelves in less than 2 weeks. Did I mention I started a beauty company? The 1C guys will sit on tiny glass vials with a cork in them and they will go to beauty editors, the 2C guys will be silk-screened (by Paper Moon Press!) on kraft labels that will then go onto kraft powder tubes with a chipboard top. We like to recycle! The BW image is my logo, just fyi acorns are a sign of prosperity.

Working on something super top secret but it's going to look amazing.

Sunday, November 19, 2006

It will actually print like this. I was attempting to fake a fourth color on the mushroom, like 35% of the dark blue that will serve as the main color but the only way to print the mushroom that way is to put a screentone behind it providing the insinuation of a lighter blue but when up close just tiny dots of the same color. c'est la vie!

In an ideal world it would look like this, 4C on brown paper!

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Did I mention this was a calendar/poster? Oi vey, it's taking SO much time!

Friday, November 10, 2006

Working on a poster design for the band SPOON. Time intensive but I like how it's turning out. This is a rough. It'll be 3C silk screen.

Kara had her cards reprinted letterpress, so pretty! I took away the three other trades written in the style of 'doula' seeing as though she is THE doula these days. She thought the other titles were superfluous. What would all the pregnant women in SF do without her?

Just finished an illo job for photographer Chris Buck. I abstract his photos into line drawings then he has them tooled out of leather and bound for his portfolios. A fun project for the both of us. I'm only posting my favorites.
